Heritage Day

Deltaville had Heritage Day on Saturday. The day starts with a pet parade and children's parade. Nannie fixed some costumes and things to carry for Emma and Maggie. Maggie had to do it by herself because Emma was in a mood and wouldn't wear or carry anything, would only walk if I held her hand, and halfway through started crying and ran to her daddy. Great start to a day I knew would end around 10pm.
Next, we go get a fresh squeezed lemonade for Emma. She cries because there is ice in it, whines for 15 minutes and tries to throw the lemonade on the ground because she is mad. Then when I start drinking it she goes into histerics. Nannie gets her a shaved ice drinnk - purple, just like Emma asked for. She has to eat that with the plastic slurpee spoon it came with and someone else has to hold the cup so that takes what felt like an hour.
Then the girls and I head home while Chucky stays in town to help the fire department sell raffle tickets. After a bottle for Libby and lunch for Emma and me, we go back into town to watch the parade. It was noisy and Emma did well. I later discovered that sitting under the tree in the shade and keeping a hat on Libby did nothing to keep her out of the sun and she now has a mild sunburn on her legs, arms and face. Bad mommy.
Then the girls and I head home again. Chucky stays in town to help the fire department get all the fireworks loaded and ready. Emma (who has not taken a nap at home in several months) is so cranky I tell her if she doesn't take a nap we aren't going to go to the fireworks. She says ok well I don't want to go anyway. Plan B: threaten her with a spanking if she gets out of her bed. She slept for more than two hours. Too bad Libby wasn't sleepy or we all could have taken a nap! Then Emma eats a pancake for dinner and we pack up and go the ball park around 6:30 to tailgate until the fireworks start around 9:00. That was the most relaxing time of the day. Emma played ball, ate some snacks, hung out with baby Garrison and otherwise amused herself while I took care of Libby and ate my dinner. Finally the fireworks started. Libby stayed awake for about half of the show, then fell asleep in her aunt Beverly's arms. Emma covered her ears at first, but halfway through was walking around and shouting that the blue ones are her favorite. She even laid down next to a couple of girls she hardly knows. Big step for our very stranger-wary child. Thank goodness for the nap.
